Abstract

In this paper the whole history of Beta distribution has been reviewed, pointing out the anticipative contribution of Corrado Gini, who already in 1911, dealing with a probabilistic problem in demography, proposed the Beta distribution to give an initial distribution to the possible probabilities of a future event. Some of the several proposed extensions of Beta distribution are outlined, and the role of Beta as conjugate prior in Bayesian inference is evidenced. Finally, some of the most interesting applications of Beta and related distributions are summarized.
