This study examines the pathways to the first birth from a couple’s perspective, focusing on the role of educational pairings, i.e. the combination of his and her education. A key demographic trend of the past decades has been the increasing share of first births occurring outside marriage. By means of a multistate approach, we examine the connection between educational pairing and the transition to a marital or non-marital birth for 12 European countries, accounting for the changes in union status. Results show that couples with lower human capital tend to have a higher risk of non-marital childbearing. This finding is consistent across all the European countries.
