Abstract

The paper aims at describing the custom of social homogamy in a rural population of mid-nineteenth century, Casalguidi (Tuscany). The analysis is based on individual life-histories reconstructed from information drawn from both parish registers of birth, marriage, and death as well as from Status Animarum, sort of census-like source. Those data have been then integrated with information taken from the Family Tax register.

The study investigates both the level and determinants of social homogamy, using descriptive method’s such as the Gini’s homophily index and Event History techniques in discrete time. The results show high levels of social homogamy especially among sharecroppers as well as the strong influence of parents in the partner choice of their children.
