Abstract

Several parametric mortality models have been proposed to describe the age-specific pattern of the force of mortality since Gompertz introduced his "law of mortality" almost two centuries ago. In this article, we introduce a very general class of models, the family of location-scale models, and we show that many mortality models used in the demographic literature can be considered as special cases of this family. After presenting some relationships that exist between this family and measures of concentration of life spans, we implement a procedure, based on life tables of the Human Mortality Database, which allows one to derive the best specification of the family for any specific age range. An illustration for middle-age mortality is provided as an example.
