A SEM model to study childlessness determinants
Annalisa Donno

Last modified: 2015-09-05

In Italy the prevalence of definitive childlessness has doubled from 10% for women born in the 40s to 21% for those born in 1970. A comprehensive theory of childlessness to explain this change has not been well-developed yet. Several determinants, often inter-related, have been proposed in the literature, but their relative impact is not easily identifiable and quantifiable. The aim of this paper is to analyze micro-level determinants of childlessness in Italy, by studying changes over cohort, using retrospective data from 2008 Multipurpose Survey. A Structural Equation Models (SEM) approach is used, to specify and assess causality networks among different childlessness-related aspects and childlessness itself.
