Abstract

A careful examination of Corrado Gini’s contributions to probability eas- ily leads to identify some lights and shades. Indeed, while his work on the theo- retical foundations has limited relevance and does not basically confront itself with the most important trends in the literature at that time, his ideas and innovations on more technical issues have had a great impact. Evidence of this duality will be duly provided and, as an example of Gini’s influence, attention will be focused on the role of his invention of dissimilarity, which has indirectly had a considerable impact on the development of certain research areas in probability theory.
