Abstract

The paper explores the characteristics of resilient students in the Italian context using INVALSI data for 2011/12 and 2012/13 and focusing on the impact of school-level factors’ switch between grade 5 and 6. The research question can be summarized as follows: Which characteristics are related to resiliency and how much the variation in school’s factors affect the student’s probability to become resilient? As a preview of the results, we find that a peer effect at school-level fosters resiliency among disadvantaged students. In particular, attending a school (at grade 6) where peers have better academic performances than those in the previous school (grade 5) is positively related to resilience.
