Corrado Gini's Biography

Born: May 23 1884, Motta di Livenza, Treviso
Died: March 13 1965, Rome
Research interests: Statistics, Demography, Sociology
Academic positions: 1910 University of Cagliari, 1913 University of Padua, 1925-1965 "La Sapienza" University of Rome
Honoris causa degreess: Economics at the Catholic University of Milan (1932), Sociology at the University of Geneva (1934), Sciences at Harvard University (1936), Social Sciences at the University of Cordoba, Argentine (1963).

He enrolled at the University of Bologna where he graduated from Law School in 1905. While completing his degree, he displayed a strong interest for other disciplines and, in addition to law, he also studied mathematics, economics, and biology. His subsequent scientific work developed along two main subject areas: the social sciences and statistics. His interests ranged well beyond the formal aspects of statistics and encompassed the laws that govern biological and social phenomena. In 1910 he was appointed to Chair of Statistics at the University of Cagliari and in 1913 he moved to the University of Padua. In 1920 he founded the statistics journal Metron, which he directed until his death and which never accepted articles that lacked any practical applications of statistical methodology. He became a professor at the University of Rome in 1925. At the University, he founded a lecture course on sociology, which he maintained until his retirement. He also set up the School of Statistics, in 1928, and, in 1936, the School of Statistical, Demographic and Actuarial Sciences. In 1928 Gini founded the Italian Committee for the Study of Populations (Comitato italiano per lo studio dei problemi della popolazione) which, two years later, organised the first Population Congress in Rome. In 1926 he was appointed as President of the Central Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) in Rome. He has put a strong effort to provide ISTAT with an efficient organization with the aim of making it as the only center for Italian statistical services. He resigned in 1932 in protest at interference of his work by the fascist regime. In 1934 he founded the journal Genus, housing papers of all the disciplines linked to population issues (demography, antropometry, biometrics, sociology, psychology). He was elected President of the Italian Statistical Society from 1941 to 1965.
