Abstract

A criterion for the construction of composite indicators of well-being in European regions at level NUTS2 is suggested. A subset of the variables available in Eurostat database is selected, with reference to the various domains of this latent phenomenon. After a fuzzy transformation, the variables are aggregated into fuzzy synthetic indicators (with different weighting criteria). For each region the fuzzy indicator value may be interpreted as membership degree to the subset of the areas with the highest well-being. A comparison with other multidimensional methods highlights the advantages of the suggested approach.
